Design Revealed for New Metropolitan Museum Wing
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled the design for its new Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing, which will increase gallery space by nearly 50%. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for the project, designed by Frida Escobedo.
The five-story, 126,000-square-foot wing will preserve the building’s historical footprint and honor the museum’s architectural legacy while addressing sustainability, accessibility and infrastructure improvements. Visitors to the new wing, which will house 20th- and 21st-century art, will also enjoy sweeping views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline from indoor and outdoor spaces, including an expanded rooftop garden.
Construction is set to begin in 2026, with an opening planned for 2030.
